LAHORE Shahbaz Ali Taseer, a son of slain governor of Punjab Salmaan Taseer, was kidnapped in broad daylight from C2 Gulberg-III, days after an American citizen Dr Warren Weinstein was abducted from Model Town. Shahbaz was kidnapped near Taseer familys business head office (First Capital Group) on Ameeruddin Road before Friday prayers. After leaving his Cavalry Ground residence in a silver Mercedes Kmpressor (LZT-1), Shahbaz reached near his office at around 10:54am, when four men riding a car and a motorbike intercepted and held him hostage on gunpoint. The Model Town Police investigators said that only one firearm, a 444 rifle, was used in the incident, and they suspected it was a work of some banned outfit. However, no one had claimed the responsibility till filing of this report. A case (1036/11) under section 365 of PPC was lodged against unidentified kidnappers on the statement of Ayesha Tammy, aunt of Shahbaz Ali Taseer. The City Police also took two suspects into their custody, who were shifted to some undisclosed location for interrogation. Reportedly, both are being incriminated for chasing Shahbaz Taseer seconds after he left his residence and advanced to his office. But both of them were released after initial investigations. The City Police chief Malik Ahmed Raza Tahir said his car was intercepted by a black SUV and a motorbike few yards from Shahbazs office while three men dragged him out of the car and took him away. Minutes after the incident, the CCPO flanked by DIG Operations, SSP Operations and SSP Investigation visited the crime scene. The police told reporters that Taseers family driver namely Fawad spotted the abandoned car and phoned emergency police 15. Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said that Taseer was provided with a security escort comprising Rangers and police personnel, but he was not using them at the time of his kidnapping. He, however, was optimistic about his early release as he said all the investigative agencies have been put on high alert. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani directed Inspector General Police (Punjab) to take all measures to recover Shahbaz Taseer. President Asif Zardari rang up the widow of Salman Taseer and assured her that they would make all-out efforts to recover her kidnapped son. President Zardari assured Aamina Taseer that law enforcement agencies have been directed to take all measures for the recovery of Shahbaz. Prime Minister Gilani also telephoned the daughter of Salman Taseer, Shehrbano and assured that no effort would be spared to recover her brother. Earlier, Prime Minister Gilani telephoned Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and discussed the issue with him. The CM assured the premier of the early recovery of Shahbaz. Separately, the premier directed Punjab IGP to take all measures to recover Shahbaz Taseer. Rehman Malik hoped that the Punjab government would leave no stone unturned for the safe recovery of Shahbaz Taseer, saying that it was a big challenge for Punjab police. He assured all help on part of Federal Interior Ministry in hunting down the culprits. Latter, Punjab CM Shahbaz Sharif directed for immediate recovery of former governors son as he presided over a meeting at the Lahore Airport on his return from Karachi on Friday. Law Minister Rana Sanaullah, IGP, Home Secretary and senior officers were present. The meeting considered all aspects of the case in detail. The CM directed the departments concerned to ensure early recovery of Shahbaz Taseer. Later, he went to the residence of late Salmaan Taseer and met ex-governors wife Aamina Taseer, son Shehryar Taseer and others. The CM assured them that all resources would be utilised for early recovery of Shahbaz Taseer. The CM said he would personally supervise the investigation of the case and CCPO would regularly inform them about the progress of the investigation. The family members expressed confidence in the steps taken by the Punjab government. The TV footage shows two persons on motorbike appeared in front of the Shahbazs Mercedes on a certain spot, which is surrounded by the residences of PML-Q MPA Samina Khawar Hayat and Assistant Commissioner of Model Town. Meanwhile, their two accomplices riding a black SUV approached from the rear side and overpowered Shahbaz. The footage further shows that after taking him into captivity the kidnappers turned back on Ameerudding Road and headed towards Firdous Market via Cavalry Flyover, which leads straight to DHA and the cantonment areas. A traffic warden Zeshan, discharging his duty near Hussain Chowk, told this scribe he witnessed a black SUV, white Corolla and a motorbike speeding through the area and made a sharp turn and dropped out a black rifle-444 from one of the cars in front of Park Plaza Hotel. Shabhaz was with his friend Rashid when he drove to the office and later we knew some unidentified people have kidnapped him, his brother Sheryar Taseer told media men. Sheryar further said their family had been receiving threats from the Taliban and extremist groups. I think such elements might be behind my brothers abduction, he remarked. Though some police quarters said the kidnappers thrashed Rashid and threw him on the road. But the TV footage showed Shahbaz alone. Most probably, if Rashid was with Shahbaz, he had been dropped somewhere on the way. Pace Departmental Store Manager Hussain Jaffery told reporters that Shahbaz Taseer used to come to office at 11am and when he rode a Prado, he would be seen escorted by security guards. But on Friday Shahbaz was on a Mercedes at the time of his kidnapping, he said, adding that Shahbaz was receiving warnings to withdraw the murder case of his father, Salman Taseer. However, he said Taseer family had property worth billions of rupees and there were reports of family feuds also. A National Response Centre for Cyber Crimes (NR3C) team also visited Shahbazs office and residence and checked his car to collect forensic evidence. The team consisted of NR3C Deputy Director Sajjid Akram Chaudhry, NR3C SHO Ahmer Naeem, forensic expert Abdul Ghaffar and hardware engineer Muhammad Usman. SSP investigation Abdul Razzak Cheema said the city police have sealed all entry and exit points while high-ranking investigative teams comprising FIA, ISI and City Police personnel have been constituted to trace out the kidnappers. Data in the mobile phone of Shahbaz is being checked, he said, adding that it would greatly help police to find out the culprits. City police also constituted a separate team headed by SSP Investigation Abdul Razzaq Cheema and comprising SP CIA Omer Virk, DSP CIA Kotwali Raees Ahmad Khan Lodhi and others top investigators to probe into the case. Shahbazs personal guard Liaquat told investigators that Shahbaz often used to travel in a bigger car and he would sit beside him. But on Friday, he was travelling in a smaller car and asked him to go.
