Use of iodised salt reached up to 69pc: Survey



BHAKKAR - School children all over the district are being educated about Iodine Deficiency Disorders in seminars organised at government schools by the Health department in collaboration with Micronutrient Initiative-Pakistan.
The views were expressed by Bhakkar EDO Health Dr Mumtaz Hussain Sajjid, while addressing students at Government High School Kotla Jaam on Saturday.
Speaking on the occasion, District Focal Person Iodine Program Dr Muhammad Suleman Zahid said that Micronutrient Initiative is supporting the health Department regarding provision of KIO3 & other equipment to salt processors on regular basis. He also shared the results of National Nutrition Survey 2011 with School Teachers & Children which showed that the usage of iodised salt at household level has reached up to 69% all over Pakistan, due to this severe Iodine Deficiency especially in Children has decreased rapidly from 23.4 to 2.1.
Micronutrient Initiative Pakistan coordinator Muddasir Shehzad also addressed the Children, saying that the Health Department was trying to achieve the goal of 100% adequate iodisation. He added that the goal can only be achieved if the whole community starts using iodised salt.
