Shiffrin takes Killington slalom

LOS ANGELES - Olympic and world champion Mikaela Shiffrin returned to the winner's circle on Sunday, with a dominant performance in her favourite slalom event where she stormed to her first World Cup victory of the season. The 22-year-old American blitzed the field in snowy and windy conditions, producing the best combined time over two runs of one minute, 40.91 seconds at the Killington Mountain ski resort in Vermont. "It worked out quite well," said Shiffrin. "It wasn't easy but when I ski balanced it makes it easier than when I don't.” Shiffrin led by a wide margin of 0.89 seconds after the morning run and ended up a huge 1.64 seconds ahead of runner up Petra Vlhova. Bernadette Schild placed third, a full 2.67 seconds adrift of Shiffrin. Denise Feierabend finished fourth and Frida Hansdotter fifth.–AFP

 

 

Jansrud wins World Cup super-G

LAKE LOUISE - Reigning Olympic champ Kjetil Jansrud got his World Cup speed season off to a flying start Sunday by capturing the Lake Louise super-G. The 32-year-old Norwegian veteran completed the season-opening super-G in a time of one minute, 30.76 seconds to finish 0.28 seconds ahead of runner-up Max Franz of Austria. "Winning the race proves that you are on the right track, so I'm very happy with my win today in Lake Louise," he said. Franz was second in a time of 1:31.04 while his Austrian compatriot Hannes Reichelt placed third in 1:31.08.–AFP

 

Malik grabs three titles in ITF Seniors

LAHORE - Rashid Malik of ZTBL won the men’s singles 45 title by routed Jehanzeb Khan 6-1, 6-3 in the 32 Maple Leaf Cement ITF Seniors World Ranking Tennis Championship Grade-4 here at Bigh-e-Jinnah tennis courts. In-form Rashid didn’t allow his opponent to settle down with powerful cross court and down the lines shot. This was his third title in this event. Asad Niaz pairing with Khawaja Khurram annexed doubles title of 60 event by beating Rao Itikhar and Rai Zahid in a well-contested three-set match. Asad/Khurram won the first set 6-3, but Rao/Zahid fought back well to win the second set 6-3. The match super tie break was won by Asad/Khurram by paying some good shots at crucial moments. Secretary Sports Punjab Amir Jan was the chief guest and distributed prizes among the winners.–Staff Reporter

 

 

Army riders dominate National Cycling

LAHORE - Showing astute planning and superior technique, Pakistan Army riders dominated the opening day of the National Men And Women Cycling Championship by winning three events out of five contested here on Monday at the cycling velodrome. Altogether, one hundred cyclists belonging to all the affiliated units of the Pakistan Cycling Federation (PCF) are featuring in the event. Army won the 1000 meter individual time trial (men's elite), 4000 individual pursuit men's elite, 3000 meter individual pursuit women's elite. Wapda won the 500 meter individual time trial women's elite and KP claimed the first place in 1000 meter individual time trial men's junior. Shoe Planet Polo Cup begins today

LAHORE - The six-goal Shoe Planet Polo Cup 2017 will stroll into action today (Tuesday) here at the Lahore Polo Club (LPC) ground and will be contested among nine teams. The participating teams are divided into two pools as pool A consists of Honda Chenab, Elan, Guard Group and United Snacks Polo while pool B has Dawood Group, Black Horse Paints/Artema Medical, Sakuf, Diamond Paints and Newage. The inaugural encounter of the opening day will be played between Honda Chenab and Elan teams at 2:00 pm and Guard Group will vie against United Snacks in the second match to be played at 3:00 pm. LAHORE – Young Krishan Nigar Gymkhna Cricket Club has routed Musa Builders Cricket Club by 5 wickets in a friendly fixture played here. Batting first, Musa Builders piled up a total of 310 runs with R Butt hammering 80 runs, Ajmal 70 and Adnan 65 runs. Mazhar grabbed 4 wickets for 50 runs. Young Krishan Gym chased the required target for the loss of 5 wickets. Waqas hit 12 fours and 10 sixes to gather 140 runs while Zeeshan slammed 80 and Fahad 50 runs.
