Naveed Alam criticises PHF

LAHORE Former Olympian Naveed Alam has criticised Pakistan Hockey Federation president Qasim Zia and pointed out that central contract were awarded on merit. Talking on Waqt televisions popular sports programme Game Beat, Naveed Alam and Muhammad Saqlain alleged the game had become a one-man show. Saqlain alleged that the players were not even given win bonus of two matches for Olympics when the federation got the bonus for three matches in Beijing Games. Alam said that central contract to the players were given on the basis of nepotism and not on merit. Although no player has publicly spoken out, some players on condition of anonymity, confirmed the federation had not paid them the promised USD 100 daily allowance during the recent tour to Holland. We were paid around Rs 800 per day (USD10) throughout the tour. When we asked the federation that we get USD 100 on foreign tours, the PHF said this was not a tour but a training camp, a player said. Incidentally, the national selectors retained majority of the players who were on training tour to Holland.
