ISLAMABAD  – Chief Patron of the Tehreek Minhaj-ul-Quran International, Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, on Saturday urged the United Nations, the United States and the OIC to take measures for stopping individuals or groups from playing with the world peace.
Addressing a press conference here at the National Press Club through video link from Canada, Dr Qadri said that those, who had committed blasphemy in the garb of freedom of expression, were the worst enemies of humanity. “Such acts will create divisions and hatred, and break fragile relations between the Muslims and the West,” he said.
“Such an act should be stopped at all costs. Allowing it does not fall within the scope of freedom of expression as it is also against the concept of basic human rights,” he said. The blasphemous film has not only hurt the feelings of 1.5 billion Muslims but also of billions of peace-loving people belonging to different religions and cultures of the world, he added.
He said that he had written a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon, US President Barack Obama, Secretary General of Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) Prof Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu and heads of world human rights organizations, asking them to intervene into the matter.
Dr Qadri , in the letter the copy of which was shared with the journalists, said,”The blasphemous film only strengthens the position of terrorists, damages the morale of those, who struggle against terrorism and create unrest in the Muslim world while spawning difficulties for the forces of peace.
“A handful of individuals, it does not matter whether they are related to mosque or church, cannot be given the right to flippantly play about with peaceful co-existence and their so-called sentiments cannot be preferred over global peace,” Dr Qadri wrote in the letter.
He said, “If we do not stop these events in our time, it will leave a most terrible legacy for generations to come. So individuals or groups should never be allowed to play with the world peace.
Therefore, this becomes our responsibility to exercise legislative control at universal level - the UN.”
Dr Qadri said that many European countries had laws on their statute books that forbade defamation of religions.
