NUML scholars proceed to US for research
Islamabad - The fourth cohort of National University of Modern Languages (NUML) Islamabad, comprising nine young graduates, scholars and faculty members, received their tickets and health insurance cards in order to attend a two-month long UNT-NUML Research Fellowship programme at University of North Texas (UNT), USA.
In a simple ceremony, Rector Maj Gen (Retd) Masood Hasan and Director General (DG) Brig Azam Jamal handed over the tickets and insurance cards to eight female and one male PhD and MPhil scholars of the English studies department. Registrar Brig (Retd) Saeed Akhtar Malik and Dr Saeed Sheikh, head of English studies department, were also present in the ceremony. This group of nine selected scholars of NUML will proceed to University of North Texas (UNT) on 22nd of January 2015.
The cohort is proceeding to UNT under Research Fellowship Programme, which is part of a three-year long academic partnership between NUML and UNT, aimed to boost the research and academic culture in the university. A total of 18 graduates and 26 faculty members have attended the fellowship programme so far.
Talking to faculty members, Rector Maj Gen (Retd) Masood Hasan said that the opportunity was a trust for scholars to learn and assimilate latest research and pedagogic practices at UNT and then apply them to their own environment and class. Moreover, majority of females in the group would help in getting the message across the globe that women education and emancipation is equally encouraged and supported in Pakistani society as well.
“It would be their conducts that will make them see our country through our eyes,” he added.
Talking to this scribe, Mukhtiar Muhammad, a scholar proceeding to UNT, said that getting the UNT-NUML research fellowship was a great appreciation for him and his fellows at Government Degree College Lahore, District Sawabi, as it would help him share this experience at UNT among the students and scholars of his area and encourage them to follow this path of education and prosperity.
Maria Shahid, another scholar, said that she was excited to have an opportunity to accumulate on her knowledge about emerging practices and trends in teaching and research, as well as bring back good memories of having interaction with some very experienced people in the field.
Another scholar and faculty member, Hadiya Khan, said, “I aim to optimise this opportunity to its fullest, in all aspects so that when I get back, I am able to contribute to the filed of research; more specifically, to the field of linguistics which is my area of doctoral research.”
These scholars, who are at the advanced stage of their PhD/MPhil programmes, would conduct their dissertations or research projects under the supervision of American supervisors at UNT.
They would also observe graduate and undergraduate classes studying research, also have extensive interactive sessions, and participate in cultural events under this partnership-fellowship programme.
