Suspended registrar creates mess at PMDC office

islamabad - The suspended registrar of regulatory body of medical education forcefully entered the office and assumed the charge; however, the new management committee thwarted his move to take over the body.
The health minister on Monday last clarified that though the ministry had stated in Supreme Court that “Dr Nadeem Akber is registrar of the council, according to opinion of law division, but now the new committee will decide about the fate of the registrar after going through the rules.”
But Dr Nadeem Akbar forcefully entered the office of Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PMDC) and assumed the charge. An exchange of harsh words between the officials of PMDC and Dr Nadeem Akbar was also witnessed on the occasion. Police were also called in to avert any untoward situation and bar Dr Nadeem Akbar to take any further action. Later, in the evening the management committee constituted by the government to hold fresh election of PMDC council cancelled the orders of the notification and took back the charge from Dr Nadeem.
Dr Nadeem Akbar on Monday too tried to enter the PMDC building to assume charge in the light of the law division’s opinion but the Additional Registrar Dr Shaista Faisal, who is also holding acting charge of registrar, did not allow him to do so.
“As the ministry has said that the new management committee will decide the portfolio of the registrar, we cannot allow anyone to enter forcefully and take a seat in the absence of any formal orders,” said Dr Shaista Faisal.
The PMDC has been in the headlines for controversies surrounding the regulatory body for quite a long time. President Mamnoon Hussain on August 28 last also promulgated Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (Amendment) Ordinance 2015 that consequently had dissolved the ‘controversial’ elected council of the PMDC. A new management committee has been given the task to hold fresh elections.
