Islamabad - Bahrians enrolled in mass communication programme honed their journalistic skills here at a seminar.
A one-day seminar on “Communication for Development” was organised here at Bahria University (BU) with the collaboration of United Nation Information Centre (UNIC) yesterday to share best practices in the field of media and development and to provide mass communication students with inspirational guidance for their professional growth. The seminar was divided in three sessions in which respective speakers and moderators enlightened the participants about the communication and development.
Minister for Trade and Commerce, Engr Khuraam Dastgir Khan while delivering his remarks as chief guest said that this seminar offered a good opportunity for highlighting the role of the various stakeholders involved in the development and humanitarian work in Pakistan, including the government of Pakistan, member states, donor agencies and civil society. Communication is vital for sharing information on human development with wider audiences, he added.
Earlier in his welcome address, Rector of Bahria University, Vice Admiral Tanveer Faiz HI (M) said in the present day no individual or a nation can live and progress in isolation. Globalised society is influenced and guided by the advanced communication technologies.
Understanding the importance of media in the national building and development, Bahria University has established media studies departments at its Islamabad and Karachi campuses. The technical knowledge is imparted to the students through advanced TV, radio and internet technologies, he said.
The seminar speakers and moderators deliberated ideas about women in the media, documentary-making and photo-journalism and media development.
In his concluding remarks, Vittorio Cammarota, Director UN Information Centre, said that reporters, documentary makers, photojournalists and media houses play a crucial role in communication for development in light of their access to large audiences. It also highlighted the crucial role women play in the media business including their accomplishments and the unique set of challenges they face.
