Rawalpindi - The Government Degree College for Women, Gujar Khan, is facing numerous problems including water shortage, lack of faculty members and classrooms and poor sanitary conditions.
The only road leading to the college is also in dilapidated condition whereas the area people including shopkeepers used to throw garbage along the boundary wall of the college causing health hazards. The construction work of a hall that started 5 years ago is yet to be completed. At present some 2200 female students are enrolled with the college.
Talking to The Nation yesterday, a large number of college students said that they have been facing acute shortage of clean drinking water for last many years but the government and other public elected representatives are not taking any step to provide them potable water. They said they have no option except to go out of the college to buy mineral water to drink.
The students said the college is also facing shortage of teachers as only one English lecturer was available for teaching the language to 2200 students. They said that the government and college administration are also trying to cater to the need of students by inducting faculty on ad-hoc basis but this is not the proper solution of the problem. “It is very hard for me to prepare my English lesson in absence of English lecturer. My parents are poor and they cannot afford an English tutor for me at home or in academy,” said Noreen, an FA student of the college.
The students have demanded of the authorities to fill vacant posts of teachers at the degree college, besides resolving the issue of water shortage.
Secretary Education Punjab, PML-N MNA Gujar Khan Raja Javed Ikhlas and MPA Iftikhar Warsi were not available for their comments on the issue.
