Protest called off as govt accepts teachers’ demands

KHANEWAL -After their meeting with the Punjab secretary, the Punjab Teachers Union office-bearers has called off their proposed protest demonstration and a sit-in scheduled to be staged in front of the Punjab Assembly Lahore in favour of their demands.
Supreme Council of Punjab Teachers Unions under the leadership of Ghulam Mustafa Riaz met with the Punjab Secretary Abdul Jabbar Shaheen in Lahore, and presented him their charter of demands regarding difficulties being faced by the teacher community regarding retirement, pension, transfers and postings etc.
After the meeting, the secretary education agreed and issued the notification to resolve their problems, vide notification No SO (SEIII) 5-61/2015/6-5-2015. According to the notification, the teachers will not be forced to retire from service over zero result and the below-result policy will not be implemented.
Moreover, orders will be issued to regularise the contractual teachers within a week; primary teachers will be upgraded; promotion of teachers and their service package will be dealt with until May 31; on the outstanding result of 8th and 10th class, teachers must be awarded in cash and promoted to next grade; teachers have right to avail 25-day privilege leave; and head of the institute has power to approve it. However, a committee has been formed for the solution to other problems faced by teachers which will present report within one month.
Markazi President Rai Ghulam Mustafa Riaz then thanked the secretary and said that the teachers will play their active role to achieve the goal of the Punjab government.
