Staff, students protest against raid

MIRPUR (AJK) - A protest demonstration was held at University of Science & Technology Mirpur as a 10-member AJK Accountability Bureau team raided MUST Secretariat Office for the third consecutive day on Friday and demanded official record about the recent appointments made by the varsity.
The academic and other staff members as well as students of the state-run university protested over the alleged misbehaviour with Registrar Prof Mirza Waris Jaraal in his office.
"Although the Head of the AB team Goher Rehman was without any formal written order from the chairman or other competent authority of the Ehtesab Bureau to produce the required record, yet he was told that the varsity would provide the copies of the required record," the registrar told this scribe when contacted.  He added, "On this the AB Team head DD Goher Rehman started using harsh language directing this office (Registrar) to produce the record within next minutes or be ready to face the music at the hands of the Accountability team."
The registrar said that his office handed over required record containing 34 cases about the appointments made by the varsity, to the team of the Ehtesab Bureau on its first day to his office 20, 2015). The episode ignited the academic and other staff members of the varsity besides the students who gathered in front of the Registrar offices and started raising slogans against the AJK Ehtesab Bureau and its team.
Then, a team of district administration headed by Assistant Commissioner and Magistrate Raja Qaiser Aurangzeb and DSP City Raja Azher Iqbal along with a heavy armed contingent of Special Task Force Police rushed the varsity secretariat and shifted the Accountability Bureau's Deputy Director Goher Rehman and some members of his team in its protection.
"The situation is under full control," said the Duty Magistrate Assistant Commissioner Raja Qaiser Aurangzeb Khan. Senior officials of the Mirpur division administration including Commissioner Raja Amjad Pervez Ali Khan, DIG Police Dr Khalid Mahmood Chaudhan, DC Ch Muhammad Tariq and SSP Raja Irfan Salim also visited the site. They also held a meeting with Vice Chancellor Dr. Prof. Habib ur Rehman and other senior varsity officials to probe into the incident, the Duty Magistrate said.
At the same, a spokesperson of MUST said that the varsity was already providing the photo copies of the required record about the appointments made against the vacant positions in the varsity to the AJK Accountability Bureau. The spokesperson alleged that the AB team stormed into the Registrar office and they did not seem to be officials of the Ehtesab Bureau.
On a query, Head of the AB Team Deputy Director Investigations Goher Rehman said that he had written orders to conduct a raid on the office of the Registrar to recover the record about the appointments made by the sitting varsity management.
It may be added that the AJK Accountability Bureau started probe into the appointments made in the MUST on an application by a former ad-hoc security supervisor of MUST Arshad Sawar who was reportedly denied the position during the recent appointments.
