Billions allocated for free education, medicine

LAHORE - The Punjab government has allocated Rs310 billion for education and more than Rs10 billion for free-of-cost medicines in public sector hospitals, Excise & Taxation Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman said.
“Treatment of hepatitis is costly in Pakistan and most of the Punjab population cannot afford it,” the E&T minister said, adding the liver transplant facilities are also unavailable.
“Therefore, the Punjab government is establishing a state of the art kidney and liver institute & research center with a cost of Rs3 billion in Lahore.”
According to the minister, an attractive package of Rs1.41 billion has been provided to the specialist doctors to serve at THQs and DHQs. Another Rs10.82 billion has been provided for the provision of free of cost medicines in public sector hospitals, he told different delegations who called on him here on Monday.
Mujtaba further said the development budget for education sector will be utilised for setting up of computer labs in 990 high schools, providing missing facilities in 7550 schools, reconstruction of buildings of 4700 schools and opening of 500 new schools.
“Moreover, Rs150 billion will be provided for the construction of road from farms to markets that will usher in agriculture revolution in the country,” he added.
