Petition moved in court seeking lifetime ban on Amir Liaqat

islamabad -  A writ petition seeking lifetime ban on anchorperson Dr Aamir Liaqat Hussain for using hate speech and inciting violence on electronic and social media was moved Wednesday in the Islamabad High Court.

A citizen named Muhammad Abbas moved the petition through his counsel Shoaib Razzaq Advocate and cited federation of Pakistan through Ministry of Information, Chairman Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), chairman Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) and Dr Aamir Liaquat Hussain as respondents.

The petitioner stated in the petition that Dr Aamir, a self-proclaimed scholar of Islam, first appeared on television in 2006 and over a decade conducted various religious shows. One of them was “Aalim Online”.

His claim for being a Islam studies scholar was a revealed to be a hoax when it was discovered that he possessed no such certification or degree in Islamic Studies.

Aamir Liaquat hosted various TV programs including morning show, game shows, talk show and special transmissions on different channels wherein, he conducted defamatory media trial of certain individuals in the media industry, politicians and other personalities.

He mocked, ridiculed and directing severe allegations on these people in the name of religion.  using religion as a weapon to harm them and a shield at the same time to protect himself.

“On many occasions, Amir Liaquat used Quranic verses against certain individuals to show how a blasphemer should be punished.

He went to the extent of endangering the lives of these individuals without any fear of Allah (SWT) that he is using Islam to his own gain and advantages.

Many people have been disgusted and disturbed at his misuse of religion for personal gains,” maintained the petitioner.

While conducting a show on MQM leader, Altaf Hussain and other members of the party, Amir Liaquat used highly objectionable language and went as far as to accuse the party leaders of having illicit relationship with party workers.

He took names of several women and accused them of involvement in inappropriate acts.

He also alleged that a woman worker had to get an abortion from hospital in London.

According to the petitioner, Hussain also referred to the party leader, Atlaf Hussain with degrading names and ridiculing him and made several allegations.

It is unfortunate that the noble professional of journalism is being destroyed every single day, by his indecent and unacceptable journalism, at his hands.

Therefore, he prayed to the court to declare that Dr Aamir has committed gross violation of code of conduct, 2015, and PEMRA Ordinance 2002, and that chairman PEMRA has failed to act against his violations.

He requested the court to declare that Aamir is using religion as shield to further his own gains, by inciting violence and threatening the safety and well-being of various individuals.

He is therefore liable to be banned lifetime on all mediums including print media, electronic media and social media.

He further prayed to the court to direct the Chairman PEMRA to ban him from appearing as a guest, analyst, reporter, or actor, in any audio, video, promo or advertisement.

He prayed to the court to direct the chairman PTA to immediately delete/block all social media accounts of Dr Aamir on internet.
