UNITED NATIONS - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has condemned the assassination of Punjab Governor Salman Taseer on Tuesday as a loss for Pakistan, his spokesman said.
The Secretary General extends his condolences to the family of Taseer and to the Government and people of Pakistan, his spokesman Martin Nesirky said in statement read out at the regular news briefing. Governor Taseer, whom Ban described as a prominent leader was shot at close range by one of his guards as he was getting into his car in Islamabads Kohsar Market.
Staff Reporter from Islamabad adds: US Ambassador to Pakistan Cameron Munter has said that Punjab Governor Salman Taseer had the courage of his convictions and was a champion of tolerance. In his condolence message issued Tuesday, Ambassador Munter said he was deeply saddened by the assassination of Governor Taseer.
