Militants bomb primary school in Peshawar: officials

Militants on Tuesday bombed a mixed primary school in Peshawar, which is troubled by frequent insurgent attacks, officials said. "The school building, which consisted of three rooms was destroyed in the blast," local police official Hamzullah said. There were no immediate reports of casualties because the school was closed for the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr to mark the end of Ramadan. Khan said the bombing bore the hallmarks of the Taliban, who are opposed to the education of women and frequently target girls' schools. Provincial education official Mohammad Nisar also confirmed the incident. Militants have destroyed hundreds of schools, mostly for girls, in the North West frontier Province (NWFP) over the past few years. Nearly 200 schools were destroyed in the Swat valley alone during a two-year violent campaign by radical cleric Maulana Fazaullah to enforce sharia law.
