ISLAMABAD Pakistan Armys senior officer Brig Moeen-ud-Din and his driver were gunned down, while his guard sustained bullet injuries as two unidentified assailants opened indiscriminate firing at their official jeep here on Thursday.
According to eyewitnesses, two unknown armed miscreants, seemingly in their 20s, opened fire at Brig Moeens official Jeep at Barlas Market in Sector G-11-1, when he was on his way to a meeting.
Resultantly, Brig Moeen and his gunman 'Hawaldar Asghar Ali died on the spot while driver Lance Naik Sabir Hussain got serious bullet injuries.
The army officers vehicle was riddled with bullets and its windscreen and side windowpanes shattered.
After the ambush the assailants managed to flee from the scene while riding on a motorbike.
Soon after the tragic incident, the Brigs injured driver was brought to PIMS by a local taxi driver.
Similarly, the dead bodies of both army officials were shifted to PIMS by Rescue 1122.
It is relevant to note here that currently Brig Moeen-ud-Din was performing his duties in Sudan with a UN mission and he had arrived to Pakistan to participate in funeral of his father-in-law.
According to eyewitness, Rashid, a shopkeeper, I was opening my shop and I saw two young men riding on a bike, one of them opened indiscriminate fire on the Brigs vehicle from the front side while the second one attacked from the rear side.
The driver of the jeep lost his control and the jeep came to a halt at a distance of some twenty feet.
The assailants once again rushed to the jeep and again targeted the Brig through indiscriminate firing, he opined.
He further said, After targeting the army officer, when the attackers were going towards their bike, the gun of one attacker slipped from his hands and he took it again and while riding on the bike with his accomplice, they fled from the scene, he added.
PIMS spokesman, Dr Waseem Khawaja said that injured Sabir Hussain got two-bullet fire and he was in critical condition.
He said that Brig Moeen received multiple bullets in his chest, arms and head.
When asked about Asghar Ali, Dr Waseem said that he too received multiple bullets.
He said that the dead bodies have been handed over to the relatives while injured driver Sabir Hussain has been shifted to CMH Rawalpindi.
Police took some six eyewitnesses into custody for interrogation.
It is pertinent to mention here that it was the second attack in the last three days in the federal capital as the other day two suicide bombers blew themselves up in Islamic University that left seven dead.
Meanwhile, Shalimar Police registered FIR (no 499) against 4 unknown assailants.
It is relevant to note here that more than 30 persons have been taken into the custody of Shalimar Police for interrogations.
According to a press release issued by ISPR the Namaz-e-Jinaza of Brigadier Moeen Ud Din Ahmed who embraced Shahadat during attack by terrorists at Islamabad was held at Chaklala Garrison.
Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, General Tariq Majid, Chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and a large number of senior serving and retired Officers, Junior Commissioned Officers, Jawans, relatives of Shaheed and senior civil officials attended the Namaz-e-Jinaza.
A smartly turned out contingent of Pakistan Army presented the Guard of Honour to the Shaheed.
