We killed Qandeel. Yes, we did it. As a media person, I take full responsibility for her murder.
We were just busy in sensationalism as usual. And it cost her life. But we will keep at it, don’t worry.
Her brother and the honorable killer stated that he strangled her after he saw her selfies with Mufti Abdul Qavi. Those selfies could have been seen, trolled and ignored like many of her other previous social media posts. But we, we made sure that each and every individual in Pakistan sees them, shares them and even analyzes them.
To make the matter more prominent, because it was the most important issue of the time, we arranged primetime talk shows on the issue that was clearly serious enough to be a danger to national integrity. We just made absolutely sure that his brother watches it.
To defend his ‘honor’ he then strangled her and I am sure he will never be ashamed of it. Because it was his honor after all. Although it is another matter that she was the earning hand of the house, but honor is above that. So yeah, we in the media have done our job once again.
Ashamed? Did someone ask if we are ashamed over it?
No, we were simply reporting. No we didn’t do it to increase traffic on web pages or to enhance the viewership of our channels. Trust me, we will sell her death as well, you need not worry.
During her life, she was just a piece of entertainment for us – and obviously for our society – but as she has been killed we will now run stories, features and TV programs to tell you people, how important she was and what message she was giving. But not in her life – because if we had done that, nobody would have read or watched our newspapers and channels.
We also made sure that his brother’s ghairat woke up because after running her photos and even revealing her real identity, we made it absolutely sure that the story reaches her hometown. We ensured that it goes all the way to her family and her brother, who has been brought up in a society where honor is everything.
We must congratulate ourselves that we woke his ghairat up and as a result he did what he had to do to save and protect his honor. Mission accomplished.
No, no, we will not stop here, we will find someone else. We will run stories on him/her and make it the talk of the town and highlight it as the most important issue to be discussed. It is not our concern – by the way – whether someone lives or dies because of it.
But, if someone does get killed, halleluiah, we will sell it too. We will then tell you people the significance of the message of that person when they were alive.
There’s more on the other side of the commercial break. Stay tuned…
