Senate body to meet after Eid

ISLAMABAD - The Senate Standing Committee on Commerce would call a crucial meeting after Eid-ul-Azha in order to discuss the Foreign Ministers statement about granting the Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status to India. Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Commerce Senator Ilyas Ahmed Bilour on Tuesday told the media persons that he would call a meeting of the committee to discuss the Foreign Ministers statement about granting the MFN status to India after the Eid. Pakistans Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar few weeks back had told the National Assembly, Pakistan has decided in principle to grant the MFN status to India. However, Khar did not provide details as to when the matter would be finalised. The foreign ministers statement had raise serious reservations among the political parties and they asked the government to take the Parliament on board in this regard. Central leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and opposition leader in National Assembly few weeks back had told in a press conference that his party would oppose the move if the government decided to go ahead with the decision. If the government intends to give India MFN status, it should first bring the issue in the Parliament for debate. We have serious reservations over the governments decision, he observed. However, the government is now considering delaying the grant of MFN status to India due to the strong reaction from the political parties. On the other hand, sources in the Commerce Ministry told TheNation that Pakistan and India Commerce Secretary level talks are expected to be held from November 14 to 18 in India, however, granting MFN status to New Delhi is not included in the agenda of the meeting.
