Shipments of 150,000 tonnes fertilizer from Saudi Arabia

ISLAMABAD (APP) - Shipments of 150,000 tonnes of fertilizers would arrive in the country in September-October to overcome the shortfall of the commodity in the market, official in the Ministry of Food Agriculture and Livestock said. " There was shortfall of about 150,000 tonnes of fertilizers for the Rabi crop and the MINFALL has finalized an agreement with the Saudi Government to import it," Qadir Bux Baloch, Agriculture Development Commissioner told APP here on Tuesday. He said the shipments of urea will start arriving from September 3, followed by more shipments as per agreed schedule adding that urea availability in Punjab and Sindh, particularly in rice and cotton belts has improved. He said the country would need another 0.4 million tonnes to 0.5 million tonnes for Kharif crops and the government has also arranged the import of the commodity for the relief of the farmers and enhance agriculture production. "There is a need of 5.6 million tonnes of fertilizers for the agriculture crops throughout the year", he remarked. It may be mentioned here the MINFAL informed the Economic Monitoring Committee (EMC) on Monday that Ministry of Commerce and Minfal have signed an agreement with Saudi Government for purchase of urea. The EMC was further informed that DAP price shall shortly be notified in consultation with stakeholders. Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (Minfal) further informed that 22,000 tones of urea's first shipment is arriving in Karachi on September 3.
