PM appeals growers for more wheat production

MULTAN (APP): Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani Thursday appealed growers to enhance per acre wheat production from coming wheat sowing season to achieve self sufficiency in the country. "We will work for the prosperity of our own growers instead of extending benefits to growers of foreign countries," the PM said while addressing a big gathering of people at local circuit house where he also exchanged Eid greetings with hundreds of people. People exchanged Eid greetings with the prime minister which continued for few hours. After the ceremony, the PM met some delegations at circuit house. The PM also gave 'Eidee' to some disabled on the occasion. Prime Minister said that Pakistan would be out of economic woes after the meeting of Friends of Pakistan, a group of countries that has been formed to steer Pakistan out of economic trouble. Gilani said that government will overcome problems within next few months. He termed law and order the biggest challenge and added that his government enjoys support from all political forces to root out terrorism and extremism. The PM said that country needs to overcome terrorism problem to attract foreign investment. "I appeal Ulema, civil society representatives, media, and business community to extend full support to the government in efforts to eliminate extremism." he said. Gilani said that uplift of agriculture sector was top priority of the government and added Benazir cards for growers would enable them to get agriculture implements without  any trouble at the time of sowing and they can return the amount at the time of harvesting. He said crop insurance scheme is being introduced to offer a safety mechanism to growers to have their losses compensated in case of calamities. He said that hill torrents in Rajanpur and Taunsa caused heavy losses to growers adding that crop insurance can become a useful option in such cases. He announced that premium on crop insurance for small growers will be paid by the government. The PM said that Rs 950 per maund price of wheat announced by the government will encourage growers to grow more wheat adding it was better to offer relief direct to growers instead of spending billions to counter food shortages. The Prime Minister said that Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto created awareness among the people and gave them self-belief. "We are pursuing the philosophy of our martyred leaders." He said that people gave verdict in favour of democracy in Feb 18 polls after martyrdom of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and the will of the people is our manifesto. "We want people-friendly change in the system and to strengthen it further. We want the parliament supreme, institutions strong, media and judiciary independent and trade and students unions without shackles," PM said adding that things have started moving in this direction. He said President Asif Ali Zardari has emerged a wise leader and he is keeping all political forces aboard. Opposition is the beauty of a democratic order and that is why PML-N leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan was made the opposition leader and the chairman of public accounts committee meaning that now opposition will hold the government accountable, the PM said. It is a testimony to the fact that the incumbent government believes in democracy. He said that parliament functioned without opposition for two years during the previous regime and during those two years the previous government was successful in creating hurdles in the way of Makhdoom Amin Fahim and Maulana Fazlur Rehman in their attempts to become opposition leader. PM said Pakistan has emerged as a responsible democrtic state and an atomic power adding: "We will take all political forces along, give respect to the opposition, welcome criticism and would not mind criticism from media." He said: "We have suffered jail hardships for independence of media," and reiterated government's resolve to repeal black media laws of the previous government. Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said that 8000 Benazir income scheme forms have been made available at each constituency and added that provincial government and Baitul Maal will also offer financial support to as many poor people to end their deprivation. He said that people will see development work under execution and job market flourishing within the next three months. He said that government has offered funds for development to all MNAs whether belonging to the PPP or other party adding: "We believe in serving the poor irrespective of their political affiliations." Later, PM heard problems of the people, received applications from them and issued orders to solve their problems. PM will also spend another busy day in Multan on Friday to exchange Eid greetings with the people and to hear their problems.
