Kitchen items prices soar

ISLAMABAD (APP) - The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) for the week ended on September 30, 2008 for the lowest income group up to Rs. 3,000 has registered increase of 1.29 per cent over the previous week. The SPI for the week under review in the above mentioned group was recorded at 218.86 as against 216.07 registered in the previous week, according to Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS). The weekly SPI has been computed with base 2000-2001=100 covering 17 urban centres and 53 essential items for all income groups and combined. The SPI for the combined group registered increase of 1.34 per cent by rising from 208.11 in the previous week to 210.90 in the week under review. As compared to the corresponding week of last year, the SPI for the combined group in the week under review witnessed increase of 29.82 per cent. The SPI for the groups falling in the income brackets of 3001-5000, 5001- 12000 and above 12000 witnessed increase of 1.37, 1.40 and 1.34 respectively. During the week under review average prices of 6 items registered decrease, while that of 24 items increased with the remaining 23 items' prices unchanged. The items which recorded decrease in their average prices during the week under review included, red chillies, vegetable ghee (loose), rice irri-6, rice basmati (broken), kerosene and moong pulse (washed). The items which registered increase in their prices included, tomatoes, onions, potatoes, chicken (farm), sugar, wheat flour (average quality), wheat (average quality), bath soap (Lifebouy), washing soap (nylon), bananas, coarse latha, egg hen (farm), beef, garlic, mutton, shirting, masoor pulse (washed), and mustard oil, gram pulse (washed), gur, firewood, curd, LPG ( 11 kg cylender and mash pulse (washed). The items with no change in their average prices during the week under review included, bread plain (mid size), milk (fresh), milk powdered (Nido), vegetable ghee (tin), cooking oil (tin), salt (powdered), tea packet, tea (prepared), cooked beef plate, cooked dal plate, cigarettes K-2,lawn, voil printed, sandal gents (Bata), sandal ladies (Bata), chappal spng (Bata), electricity bulb (60wats), match box, gas charges (up to 3.3719 MMBTU), electricity charges (1-100 units), petrol, diesel and telephone local call. A review of the current prices of cement collected for the week ended on 30-09-2008 recorded a decline of 0.07 per cent over previous week and increased by 60.64 percent over corresponding period of last year.
