AARI develops post-harvest tech for mango

FAISALABAD - Scientists of Ayub Agricultural Research Institute (AARI), Faisalabad, have successfully developed post harvest technology of mango, which can considerably enhance export of the mango fruit. This was stated by Ch Raza Nasrullah Ghumman, Member Punjab Assembly while addressing a one day training workshop on "Post Harvest Management of Mango for Export" held at AARI, Faisalabad. Agricultural scientists, farmers and representatives of export promotion bureau attended the workshop. Ghumman emphasized the importance of adopting latest technology for processing, handling and export of mangoes and added that farmers should benefit from the technologies developed by scientists of AARI, Faisalabad to increase their income. He appreciated the efforts of AARI scientists in developing new varieties and said that the Government attaches top priority to agriculture sector and the problems faced by agricultural scientists would be solved. Dr. Muhammad Rashid, Director General Agriculture (Research) AARI, in his address informed that despite of constraints scientists of AARI have developed new varieties of crops, fruits and vegetables, which are grown not only in Punjab province but throughout the country. He said that it is quite unjust that AARI scientists have not been given pay scales equal to the employees of other agricultural research institutions. He drew the attention towards huge brain drain of agricultural scientists from AARI, Faisalabad due to high disparities in pay scales given to AARI scientist and scientists of other research institutions. Dr. Ihsan Ilahi Bajwa, Director Post Harvest Research Center informed that the center has developed post harvest technologies which have extended shelf life of different fruits and vegetables. The mangoes can be preserved up to 30 days with the help of this technology and the export of mangoes to USA has been facilitated due to this technological breakthrough.
