Cross-LoC trade in jeopardy

MIRPUR (AJK) (APP) - Cross-LoC trade at Poonch-Rawlakot route was once again halted as Indian-held Kashmir traders have threatened to go ahead with the boycott that started last week, till fulfillment of their demands, says a report reaching here Saturday from across the LoC. On the other hand the authorities are insisting that they can not go beyond the Standing Operation Procedures (SOP) to facilitate the trade. The trade was suspended by the businessmen of occupied Kashmir last Wednesday after Trade Facilitation Authorities of the held valley refused to allow import of Ajwain from Azad Jammu and Kashmir on the ground that it was not figured in 21 items approved for import-export by the Indian and Pakistani governments, the report said. The report further said the businessmen of the occupied state, engaged in cross-LoC trade, were opposed to abrupt ban on items by the authorities and wanted that they should be informed at least a month in advance that a particular item can not be imported from across the Line of Control (LoC) so that their financial loss could be avoided. According to the traders, the authorities had promised to convene a meeting of traders of either side of LoC (AJK and IOK) after every three months on the entry point at Chakan-Da-Bagh-Taitrinote to help the traders match their accounts. The meeting had not been arranged for last several months, they said. The report further said that the occupied Kashmir traders had refused to proceed to zero line on flimsy grounds despite the fact that the traders from other side (AJK) kept waiting for several hours before returning. The traders said the held Kashmir authorities were ready to arrange a meeting between traders of both sides of the LoC after speaking to their counterparts in Rawlakot. They added that they were also ready to accept demand of the traders for replacement of Deputy Superintendent Rajinder Singh from the trade duty in the interest of cross-LoC trade. The IOK puppet authorities were, however, of the view that they were not ready to accept the demand of the Kashmiri traders to allow drivers to proceed to AJK with on spot verification, the report said.
