Sindh govt encourages foreign investment in energy sector

KARACHI - Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has said that Sindh has good potential of indigenous sources of energy and has floated many opportunities of investment to generate coal, wind and solar-based energy in province. He called foreign investors to come forward, invest and exploit the untapped sources of energy for the betterment of both sides.
CM Qaim expressed these views while talking to the delegation of Shanghai Electric Company led by the LV Yachen Company Vice President at CM House Karachi.
During the meeting the CM Sindh said that Sindh has huge indigenous sources and it could bring the country out from energy crisis alone as such his govt was actively working on energy production.  Briefing the delegation about the coal resources in the Sindh province, CM said we have twelve blocks in Thar coal area out of which we have leased out four blocks to international standard companies and have called interest of expression from international companies to lease out other four blocks in January 2014.
He said we have floated another coal based power project at Keti Bandar aimed to generate 6,000 mega watt of electricity in phases with installation of two power plants with capacity of 660 mw each in 1st phase. This project has also component of laying 200 km railway line for transportation of coal.
He further informed the delegation that Sindh has huge potential more than 20,000MW in wind energy and Government has floated another project for investment in this sector in which about eighteen companies have expressed their interest out of these eight were Chinese.
In Addition to that Sindh has good potential in solar energy as well. He said that he had recently visited China, to discuss and deliberate with Chinese investors to invest in Sindh where the environment is conducive, labour is available at cheap rate and government is providing all incentives and other facilities to investors. He asked the delegates to avail the opportunities of investment in the said projects and assured them full support.
He said that China has the expertise and technology to generate power and we want to avail their expertise in energy sector.  On the occasion LV Yachen Vice President of Shanghai Electric while expressing his views said that his company has expertise to generate power through coal, nuclear, gas and hydro etc.  He said that they came here looking for the opportunities of investment and avail the same.
Elaborating the strength and achievements of his company he said that they intend to contribute for the development of Pakistan and Sindh as they consider them their good friend.
Chief Secretary Sindh Sajjad Saleem Hotiyana, Secretary Energy Agha Wasif Abbas, Secretary Finance Sohail Rajput, Secretary to CM Sindh Rai Sikandar, MD Thar Coal and other officers were also present on occasion.
