ISLAMABAD (INP): Suspension of supply of fuel and consumables to Nato forces in Afghanistan through Chaman and Tourkham borders has not only helped in restoring the lost dignity of the country but also resulted in decrease in prices of commodities that were being smuggled or legally exported to Afghanistan. According to details, many commodities including powdered and liquid milk, sugar, ghee, onions, potatoes and flour were being smuggled under the veil of Nato supplies. The countrymen seem much satisfied over the stoppage of fuel and consumables supplies to Afghanistan as it was matter of national sovereignty but on the other hand businessmen were also pleased as it has lowered the prices of daily use commodities in local market. Shopkeepers, Gunjmandi and other wholesale markets of Raja Bazaar in Rawalpindi said that those commodities which were in short supply in the market were now in abundance and at less rates. Liaquat Jadoon, a local shopkeeper of Rawalpindi Chungi No 22, told INP that dealers who had earlier stocked for selling to smugglers were now offering commodities such as powdered milk at much low prices as their expiry date was drawing nearer. He said that dealers who earlier showed rough attitude when these commodities were demanded were now requesting to purchase packed liquid milk and offering much lower prices to save them of massive loss. Meanwhile, hoarders and smugglers who have large stocks in their ware houses for transporting to Afghanistan and worried after closure of Chaman and Tourkham borders for transportation of commodities and other goods are offering their stocks to the wholesalers and retailers. The citizens said that decrease in commodities prices after suspension of Nato supplies reveal that smuggling to Afghanistan was major reason behind shortage and increase in prices. They urged the federal government for strict check on Pak-Afghan border to stabilize the prices and ensure their availability in local market.
