Food dept, flour mills differ over wheat rate

KARACHI  - The differences emerged among the Sindh food department and flour mills over minimum rate of wheat.
According to sources, the Flour Mills Association alleged on the Food Department that it forcing them to purchase the damaged wheat under the quota fixed for them, which is not acceptable.
However, the food department of the government refuted the allegations leveled by the flour mills.
In this regard, the official statement issued here on Sunday claimed that Sindh Food Department and Minister for Food Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar have never forced Flour Mills Association to purchase damaged/ injurious to health wheat and allegations leveled against Minister Food by Flour Mills Association are baseless and concocted.
Provincial minister said that on 3rd December office-bearers of Flour Mills Association visited the office of Minister Food, however he had to go to attend an important meeting in Chief Minister House, then Additional Chief Secretary Food had a meeting with them and issued orders on the spot to solve their problems.
It was also decided in the meeting that dues to Sindh Government against flour mills would be settled case to case and flour mills association itself decided to lift the remaining wheat of last 3 years into two parts, the wheat was brought from interior Sindh to Karachi, official statement stated. In contradiction to the agreed decision, the Flour Mills Association objected over the quality of wheat and refused to lift it that caused a heavy loss of Sindh Government.
However, the spokesperson of the department said that food department fixed the rate of flour with mutual understanding of Flour Mills Association in meeting but flour mills association violated the commitment and increased flour prices and started to loot innocent people that could not be tolerated by present democratic government.
On receiving complaints, Food Department took action against those flour mills that were selling flour at higher rates than fixed by the Sindh Government, while seven Food inspectors had also been suspended.
The food department has warned the profiteers and hoarders to avoid malpractice and sell their stocks in open market at fixed rates, either their stocks would be confiscated. He also advised flour mills association to avoid policy of black mailing and ensure selling of flour to the people at government rate.
