Pakistan team holds talks with IMF in Dubai

ISLAMABAD - The Pakistani economic team has left for Dubai other day to hold discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for consultations under article IV to be held from November 9 to 16 or 17, Finance Ministry officials told on Wednesday. Finance Ministry officials further told The Nation that discussions would have two parts i.e. technical discussions from November 9 to 13 and policy making from November 14 to 16 or 17. Finance Minister, Secretary Finance, Chairman Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Governor State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and Deputy Chairman Planning Commission would take part in policy making level discussions. Being a member country, it is obligatory on Pakistan to hold discussions with IMF once in a year under article IV to access the economic situation of the country. Meanwhile, Pakistan would seek Letter of Comfort (LoC) from IMF, which is compulsory for Islamabad to initiate discussions with other institutes like World Bank (WB) and Asian Development Bank (ADB). Sources further told that the World Bank and Asian Development Bank each has to give $500 million each to Pakistan had Islamabad able to get LoC from IMF during the upcoming discussions. However, Pakistan would not request for any new IMF programme, as it believed that there was no need for it. It would be first discussion between Pakistan and IMF after Islamabad 's decision to say goodbye to IMF. Pakistan will not request for fresh IMF programme, as at present there is no need of it, said Secretary Finance Dr Waqar Masood Khan while talking to the media persons other day. It might be mentioned here that Pakistan has to repay $1.2 billion to the IMF during the upcoming year 2012, however Finance Ministry believed that they would repay it trough in its own resources rather than taking new loan for it.
