'Duber Khwar' to generate 130MW

ISLAMABAD (APP) - The construction of Duber Khwar dam is expected to be completed in October 2010 which will add 130 megawatt electricity to the countrys transmission system. Work on the dam was initiated in June 2003 and was set to be completed in June 2006. sources told APP here on Monday. However, they added, the construction could not be completed on the fixed date, which was later extended till October 2010. They said the dam was having 29.88 meter height and 5,243 meter length of tunnel adding that its preliminary cost (PC) was estimated Rs 9,754.26 million. Rs.6741.13 million has been spent on the project so far and the government has allocated Rs.3,500 million under Public Sector Development Programme, they added. The sources said that power generation was the main objective of the dam which is being built on Duber Khwar River, Right Bank tributary of Indus River near Patan in district Kohistan (NWFP). They said the project envisages installation of 130 MW hydropower plant along with allied transmission and grid facility. The plant would generate 595 Gwh per annum of electricity, they added. The sources said installation of buried earthling system at El.882.05 -689 and Thermo Weld connection in concrete blocks 8-B, 8-C, 8-D, 8E, 9-A,9-B,9-E,10-A-B-C and 10-E has been completed. Similarly, erection of steel armour plates on left and right faces of the site wall have also been completed, they added. The government has expedited work on the dam in order to generate hydel electricity.
