LAHORE - A high level meeting presided over by Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif on Saturday approved renaming the garments industrial zone as “Punjab Apparel Park” and constitution of the Board of Management for running its affairs. Renowned industrialist Muhammad Ahsan will be the chairman of the Board.
Provincial Ministers Tanvir Aslam, Muhammad Shafique, Advisor Dr. Ijaz Nabi, MPA Dr. Ayesha Ghaus Pasha, Senior MBR, Chairman Planning & Development, concerned secretaries, senior officials of PIEDMC and industrialists associated with garments industry attended the meeting.
Shahbaz Sharif said Punjab Apparel Park would be set up at 1500 acres land and an amount of Rs.2.5 billion have been released for acquiring the land. He said that 1170 plots of different size would be established in the Park which will also have a hospital, vocational training institute, playgrounds, a modern treatment plant and other necessary facilities. He said that a labour colony will also be established in Punjab Apparel Park. Shahbaz Sharif said that initially a power plant of 25 megawatt will be set up for providing uninterrupted electricity to the industries. He said that quality construction of sewerage, water supply, drainage and roads in the park will be ensured.
The Chief Minister said that the project of Punjab Apparel Park will prove to be helpful in accelerating the process of industrialization in the province where investment of billions of rupees will be made. He said that investors from China, Turkey, Middle East and Europe will be invited for setting up garments projects in Punjab Apparel Park whereas investment opportunities will also be available to the local industrialists in the park. He directed that legal framework regarding implementation of the project should be given final shape at the earliest and the work of evolving master plan of the project be started. A detailed briefing was given to the Chief Minister with regard to design of the park, provision of transport, installation of power plant and other necessary facilities during the meeting.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif will announce provincial coal power policy for installing coal based power projects in Punjab within next few days.
Under coal power policy, special facilities and incentives will be announced for the investors to set up coal based power projects in the province. On the direction of Chief Minister Punjab, government has identified various places in the province for setting up coal based power plants which have been declared very suitable for coal based power plants. Survey has been completed with regard to transmission line, railway line, water and other facilities near these places.
