ISLAMABAD - The inflation based on Consumer Price Index (CPI) has surged by 22.35 per cent in the first ten months (July-April) of current financial year over the same period of last year, Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS) reported on Monday. The official data released by FBS showed that inflation has soared by 17.10 per cent in the month of April over the corresponding period of last fiscal year. Food and beverages inflation increased by 17.04pc during April 2009 as compared to the same period of the last fiscal year, the figures showed. During the period under review, the inflation measured by Wholesale Price Index (WPI) skyrocketed to 8.30 per cent. A year ago the WPI inflation was 23.50 per cent. The food inflation in this category was recorded at 17.18 per cent during April 2009 as against the same period of the last fiscal year. The Federal Bureau of Statistics data depicted that the inflation soared to 22.35 per cent during the first ten months (July-March) of the current financial year. Similarly, in the given period, the inflation based on WPI was recorded at 21.44 per cent and SPI stood at 26.33 per cent. The break-up of CPI based on general inflation (17.19 per cent) illustrated that apart from 17.04 per cent food inflation, apparel, textile and footwear inflation soared by 12.34pc in April 2009 over the same period of last fiscal year. Similarly, the house rents were increased by 18.86 per cent. The fuel and lightening prices augmented by 26.68 per cent, household, furniture and equipment by 12.63 per cent, recreation and entertainment by 13.86 per cent, education became expensive by 23.04pc, cleaning and laundry rates swelled by 16.03pc and medicare rates shot up by 13.36 per cent during the period under review. On month-on-month basis, the CPI based inflation ballooned by 1.41 per cent in April over March 2009. While inflation based on Sensitive Price Indicator increased by 1.68 per cent. Wholesale Price Indicator ballooned by 1.68 per cent. The prices of main commodities in the kitchen items, which increased in April over March include tomatoes 51.44 per cent, vegetables 16.73 per cent, fresh fruit 8.99 per cent, potatoes 8.23 per cent, gur 8 per cent, wheat flour 5.47 per cent, maida 3.22 per cent, wheat 2.71 per cent, sugar 2.52 per cent, pulse mash 2.44 per cent, egg 2.23 per cent, meat 2.13 per cent, beverages 1.90 per cent, milk products 1.60 per cent, ready made food 1.56 per cent, dry fruits 1.24 per cent, fish 1.19 per cent, and vegetable ghee 1.03 per cent. In apparel, textile and footwear group, the prices of hosiery enhanced by 1.27 per cent, footwear 1.22 per cent, silk and linen 0.72 per cent while cotton cloth 0.70 per cent in the period under review. In fuel and lightening group, cost of bulb and tube went up by 6.37 per cent in the month of April over March. In transport and communication group, prices of vehicles soared by 1.14 per cent in the period under review. In the stationary group prices of textbooks were augmented by 10.46 per cent, and tuition fee by 5.87 per cent in the month of April over March. The division of general inflation (8.30 per cent) based on WPI showed that food basket became costly by 17.18 per cent, raw materials, 18.44 per cent, fuel, lighting and lubricants decreased by 4.70 per cent, manufactures prices increased by 5.15 per cent, and building materials, 0.07 per cent, in the period under review.
