Consultation against SRO

LAHORE - The Pakistan Industrial and Traders Associations Front (PIAF) has started consultation with various trade and industrial associations to design a strategy to get SRO 283(I) 2010 withdrawn. According to a press release issued here on Tuesday, Chairman PIAF Irfan Qaiser Sheikh, Vice Chairmen Iqbal Baig Chugtai and other office-bearers have initiated the process of consultation after receiving complaints from a number of associations in this regard. They said that it would be very difficult for the business community to continue businesses in an atmosphere of fear as the SRO has been designed to harass the businessmen and discourage new investors. Addressing a meeting of the association, Chairman PIAF said that giving free access to officials of Directorate General of Intelligence and Investigation (DGI&I) to search business or manufacturing premises for obtaining records, stocks, data, accounts statements and utility bills was totally unjustified and the FBR should withdraw it. Representatives of various industrial associations including Chairman Lahore Township Industrial Association Zaheer Bhutta, Vice Chairman Shahzad Mughal, Mehmood Ghaznvi of Katarband Road Industrial Association, Shahid Baig and Adnan Butt of Ferozepur Road Industrial Association were also present on this occasion. The PIAF Chairman said that the unilateral decision would not only hit the economic activity in the country but also all efforts of the government aimed at enhancing the tax-to- GDP ratio. Irfan Qaiser Sheikh said that the government knew well that despite facing multiple internal and external challenges, the business community was paying all its taxes and there was no issue of revenue collection. He said that no business could prosper in an atmosphere of mistrust and the authorities should immediately take the decision back in the larger interest of the economy. The PIAF Chairman also said the amendment in SRO 56(I) 2010 would open up floodgates of corruption besides discouraging new investments. He said that it would have been better if the business community was taken into confidence before making any amendment.
