MIRPUR (AJK) (APP) - In order to meet the raised demand of energy in Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK), the govt is working on an integrated plan of hydel power generation to make AJK self-supported and self-sufficient in power production with the coordination of private power sector. Talking to APP here on Sunday the official sources said natural potential for generation of over 5,000 megawatt of hydel power is available in various parts of AJK and the government is intended to utilize maximum of this potential. The sources revealed that AJK Hydel Power Board, will be taking steps for implementation of the proposed plan. Highlighting the salient features of the plan, the sources revealed that under the plan hydel power generation stations comprising the power production capacity of at least two to six megawatt are proposed to be established at the selected sites with the cooperation of the Private Power Production Board. The hydel power generation projects would not only make AJK self sufficient in the power production but it would also be in a position to export extra power to other areas side by side meeting her own requirement, the sources added. The sources pointed out that after becoming self-supported in power generation, AJK government will be in a position to supply electricity to consumers on inexpensive rates besides determining the power tariff on her own. Meanwhile work is in progress for launching various hydel power projects including Neelam Jhelum hydel power project besides the preliminary work on Kohala hydel power project under the phased program, the sources said, adding, that the state-run Kundal Shahi Hydel Power project in Neelam valley district is successfully operating to meet the power requirement of population of the area.
