KESC workers strike enters 14th day

KARACHI - The strike and stage protest of CBA Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) entered into 14 consecutive days, while power failure in different areas continued, causing severe hardship to the citizens, forced them to remain on the streets to record their protest against the administration of the utility. On Thursday, the resident of old Sabzi Mandi area staged protest against power outrages, lit the tyres and blocked the main University Road, the main thoroughfare of the city, for several hours, they expressed that power outrages have severally affected their routine life, following the protest, the heavy contingent of law enforcement rushed the spot however after the negotiations the protestors dispersed peacefully. The spokesman of the utility informed that the utility have expressed great concern over the continuing subversion and disruption of the power supply system throughout the City deliberately carried out by CBA Union and its external armed accomplices and demanded the Government to take immediate action in order to provide relief to the general public. He said Tabish Gauhar, CEO of KESC, along with senior members of management, visited various offices of the utility and exhorted upon the employees to resist disrupting attempts by CBA Union and its external accomplices in order to restore smooth functioning of power supply system in the interest of the general public. These areas included Akhtar Colony, Tariq Road, Khalid Bin Waleed Road, DHA, Delton Market, PECHS and others. He added that the KESC understands that the Union has crossed all limits of decent protest, trade union ethics, professionalism, respect for law of the land, public peace and has even violated the Sindh High Court orders which clearly prohibited the union from any protest or agitation by declaring it illegal and unjustified. He further informed that on the fourth day of violence and sabotage exercised by CBA Union, the armed gangsters continued to forcefully close down KESCs service and business offices and maintenance and complaint centres. The armed hooligans harassed and threatened KESC employees outside the offices of Deputy Chief Operation Officer Distribution Region III at Bahadurabad. The armed gangs physically attacked KESC employees at VIBC office of Gadap Town and IBC Gulistan-e-Johar. A group of CBA supporters snatched a vehicle from IBC Korangi Industrial Model Zone offices and physically attacked an Assistant Executive Engineer leaving him injured, he added. On the other side the joint alliance of the trade unions while addressing a press conference held in the established camp of KESC unions at outside the Karachi Press Club demanding judicial commission to probe the issue and asked to restore nationalisation while stop the third party contract system. They informed KESC generating 38 percent electricity from his own resources while the other were being managed from Wapda and other sources as KESC plants have ability to generate 1687 megawatt electricity so as per their claimed the loadshedding in the city was artificial, it would be solved after nationalisations of the utility. Noted unions leaders including Farid Awan, Habib Uddin Junaidi, Latif Mughal, Manzoor Razi and other also present during the press conference.
