Govt establishes additional wheat procurement centres

ISLAMABAD (APP) - The government has set up additional wheat procurement centres all over the country to ensure that farmers get the minimized wheat support prices at their door steps. The Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO) as well as provincial governments of Sindh and Punjab have established additional centers for procuring wheat from farmers, sources in Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MinFA) said. For the current year, the govt has set public sector procurement target of 6.5m tons at the announced Guaranteed Minimum Price (Wheat support price) The wheat production during the fiscal year 2008-09 has been estimated at 23.3m tons against the target of 25m tons, sources said adding that the govt intends to import 0.2m tons of wheat to ensure smooth supply of wheat in all the provinces throughout the year. Due to enhancement in wheat support prices to Rs.950 per 40 kg there are less chances of smuggling of wheat to neighbouring countries, sources remarked adding that the increase in wheat support price would encourage farmers to help achieve food security in the country. Provincial food department of Sindh has procured 40,000 tons of wheat against the procurement of 25,000 tons during last year. According to MinFA estimates, potato production during the current fiscal year would be 2.48m tons against the target of 2.46m tons where as onion production 1.8m tons against the target of 2m tons. The gram production has been estimated at 760 thousand tons against the target of 650 thousand tons whereas lentil production was estimated at 15 thousand tons against the target of thousand tons. Complaint cell constituted Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture, Nazar Muhammad Gondal constituted a complaint cell for the on going wheat procurement by Government. The complaint cell would work round-the-clock to address the complaints of farmers while Syed Saadat Hussain, Section officer of the ministry would work as Liaison Officer for this complaint cell. The Minister said that no negligence would be tolerated in wheat procurement process by the officials.
