Pak, Afghan traders sign agreement to boost trade

PESHAWAR (APP) - The Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) and Ningarhar Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) have signed an agreement to boost bilateral trade between the two neighbor countries. The agreement was inked in the wake of daylong Trade Conference organized by Governor of Ningarhar Province Gul Agha Sherzai at Jalalabad. The Afghan government was represented by Afghanistan Ministers for Finance, External Affairs, Transport, Deputy Governor Ningharar, Members of Parliament, Director General Customs, President of the NCCI Dr. Mukhlis. President of SCCI Haji Muhammad Asif and Collector Customs Peshawar Rozi Khan Barki represented Pakistan on the conference. Developing trade between the two countries like enhancement of Pak-Afghan bilateral trade, measures to minimize hurdles in the trade between the two states, revision of Afghan Transit Trade Agreement of 1965, withdrawal of duty by Afghan government on Pakistani exports, ensuring availability of Railway wagon for the goods of Afghan Transit trade and reduction in fare of NLC were few salient features of the agreement. Meanwhile, it was decided that officials of Customs of Pakistan and Afghanistan would work seven days in a week for clearing of goods after July 15, 2008. The speakers of the conference highlighted the problems and hurdles faced by traders from Pakistan and Afghanistan. President of the SCCI told the conference that Pakistan's exports to Afghanistan suffered due to the imposition of duty by Afghan government on Pakistani exports. He said that in last three-years Pak-Afghan trade volume reduced to $600million, which was above 1.4billion US dollars. Haji Muhammad Asif said that like Pakistan government, the Afghan authorities should also provide the same facilities to Pakistani traders. "Afghan government should give access to Pakistani traders to Central Asian states," he added. Members of SCCI Executive Committee  and other businessmen involved in Afghan Transit Trade also participated in the conference.
