NPA to enforce DRAP to regularise medicine prices

LAHORE – The National Pharmaceutical Alliance (NPA) Vice Chairman Mian Asad Shuja-ur-Rehman has vowed that after winning the PPMA election, the first priority of NPA would be to negotiate with Drug Regulator Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) to ensure the quality of medicines across the country, adding that they would also approach DRAP to regularise the price of medicine product. He said that he foresees the NPA panel will win Wednesday (today) election of PPMA with thumping majority. He claimed that various Pharmaceutical Industries of Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Gujranwala and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cities have given their full support to NPA candidates for CEC and ZEC of North Region, adding that NPA panel is capable to make a change and resolve the issues the pharma industry is facing since a long time.  He expressed these views in a meeting organised here on Tuesday. At this occasion, panel of NPA for CEC Mian Muhammad Zaka-ur-Rehman, Khawaja Shahzeb Akram, Shafiq Abbassi, Arshad Mehmood, Nasir Javed Chaudhry, ZEC panel of North Region Choudhary Muhammad Yousaf, Iqbal Hussian Malik, Choudhary Muhammad Haneef, Imran Arshad, Tanveer Ahmad along with Dr Khalid Javaid Choudhary and other members of Alliance were also present.Mian Asad also said that we would also make sure imports and exports of medicines through one window operation, he said adding that Pakistan today has about 526 manufacturing units. The pharmaceuticals products sold in Pakistan in 2011 were approximately $1.8 billion. The Indian pharma industry supported through a pro-industry regulatory framework has emerged as a global player – without compromising on patient needs. He said that Pakistani pharmaceutical industry meets 90pc demand of finished medicines. The industry provides direct and indirect employment to nearly 6.5 million people in the country.
