Pakistan, India to increase frequency of freight trains

NEW DELHI (APP) - Pakistan and India on Thursday decided to increase frequency of freight trains from two to five to boost trade, particularly export of cement to India on Wagah-Attari section. Briefing newsmen here after the conclusion of three-day Inter-Governmental Railway meeting, Shafiqullah, Director Operations of Pakistan Railways said the other decisions taken at the meeting included fixing of timings of freight train, introduction of eight wheeler wagons by Pakistan and increase of freight boxes in a train to increase capacity of transporting goods. He said Pakistan exported 65,000 tons of cement to India in May through freight trains and it wants to boost the export further to reduce trade imbalance between both the countries. Shafiqullah said in future, India will also provide certification about fumigation of maize it is exporting to Pakistan to avoid any hassle. To a question, he said Pakistan will consider India's proposal to operate freight train on run Munabao-Khokhrapar route. Pakistan needs to upgrade infrastructure for such operation on the section. Both sides have also agreed to ensure more facilities to the passengers travelling on trains including transmitting of details about the passengers ahead of arrival of trains. Later, Pakistan delegation called on Indian Railways Minister Lalu Prasad. Shahid Malik, Pakistan High Commissioner was present on the occasion. During the meeting Lalu Prasad impressed upon the need for increasing the interchange of freight trains between India and Pakistan in view of the increased trade between the two countries especially of cement. He also emphasized on the need for opening up Munabao-Khokhrapar route between Indian and Pakistan to freight services. The Indian delegation led by R.N.Verma, Additional Member (Traffic), Ministry of Indian Railways attended the meeting. A press release issued by India after the meeting said several proposals to increase the level of freight interchange between India and Pakistan at Wagah and Attari were discussed particularly with a view to increase import of cement from Pakistan. More important among them are running of increased number of freight trains between India and Pakistan and also to a time table, experimenting with running of longer trains, introduction of some 8 wheeler wagons from Pakistan side, exploring the possibility of running of container train between India and Pakistan. Introduction of freight services between Munabao-Khokhrapar was also discussed. Both sides have agreed to initiate necessary steps towards achievement of these objectives.
