LAHORE (PR) – Lahore School of Economics hosted Ninth Annual Conference on Management of the Pakistan Economy at Burki Campus. The theme of the conference was “Human Capital Development for Sustained Economic Growth”, with the first day of the conference being devoted to discussions on the status, challenges and the need for education in Pakistan.
Dr Shahid Amjad Chaudhry, Rector, Lahore School of Economics, inaugurated the conference by welcoming all the speakers and guests. He remarked that Pakistan is not faced with a macroeconomic crisis but rather a social crisis with some of the worse social indicators. Therefore, this conference has been devoted to discussing some of these pressing social issues which are critical for economic development in Pakistan.
This was followed by a keynote address by Dr Jeffrey S. Hammer, Princeton University, who highlighted the debate about public versus private provision of services. He commented that the welfare costs of private market failure are rarely measured and the difficulties of implementing different policies are rarely discussed let alone quantified.
