ISLAMABAD - The Large Scale Manufacturing (LSM) sector showed negative growth of 3.58 percent in the month of August against the same period last year, Federal Bureau of Statistics reported on Wednesday. According to the figures, the Quantum Index Numbers (QIN) of LSM stood at 186.87 points in the period under review as compared to 193.80 points in the same period of the last year thus showing an increase of over three percent. The QIN shows industrial productivity of 100 items received from different sources, for example Oil Companies Advisory Committee (OCAC), the Ministry of Industries and Production, and provincial bureaus of statistics. The OCAC supplied the data of 11 items, the Ministry of Industries and Production provided data of 35 items and provincial bureaus of statistics provided data of 54 items. The LSM sector showed growth in the month of July, however it was expected that it could not sustain such growth in next months due to the floods. The LSM sector showed positive growth throughout the last fiscal year, which picks the overall growth of the economy in 2009-10. According to the figures, OCAC growth went down by 30.43 percent in August, Ministry of Industries growth decline by 8.43 percent while Provincial BOS increased by 8.42 percent. Meanwhile, OCAC showed a negative growth of 13.41 percent in the first two months (July-August) of the current fiscal year. The petroleum products including jet fuel oil (25.56 percent), kerosene (22.17 percent), motor spirit (16.46 percent), high-speed diesel (13.01 percent), furnace oil (29.69 percent), jute batching oil (43.14 percent), and LPG (32.58 percent) registered a negative growth in July-August against the same months of 2009. Meanwhile in OCAC, the following products showed positive growth rate including lubricating oil (1.71 percent) and solvent naphtha (31.32 percent). Ministry of Industry index registered a negative growth of 3.81 percent comprising 35 main industries in QIN of LSM. The industries showing positive growth include soda ash (8.58 percent), Phos Fertilisers (11.78 percent), jeeps and cars (22.80 percent), LSCs (18.90 percent) and motorcycles (16.13 percent). On the other hand, the industries showing negative growth are cigarettes (6.42 percent), cotton yarn (12.64 percent), cotton cloth (2.69 percent), Hessian (25.78 percent), sacking (36.96 percent), glass plates and sheet (10.46 percent) in July-August period versus the corresponding month of last year.
