Wapda accelerates work on Kachhi Canal

LAHORE – Pakistan Army Engineer-in-Chief Lt. Gen. Najeeb Ullah, Balochistan Chief Secretary, Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) Director General and others Thursday attended a briefing about Kachhi Canal Project at Dera Ghazi Khan.
Wapda Secretary Muhammad Imtiaz Tajwar, Member (Water) Hasnain Afzal and General Manager (Central) Water were also present on the occasion.
In his briefing, Kachhi Canal Project Director said that Wapda had accelerated construction work on Kachhi Canal Project to an optimum level, and an all-out effort was being made to provide water through Kachhi Canal to Dera Bugti district of Balochistan under phase-I at the earliest. He further said that the volume of construction activities could be gauged from the fact that more than 1,000 heavy machines were simultaneously working on various sites of the project.
The Engineer-in-Chief and Balochistan Chief Secretary expressed their satisfaction over the pace of work at the project, and desired that Wapda should provide water to the Dera Bugti area under phase-I by June this year.
Balochistan Chief Secretary said that the Planning Commission will be requested to hold a meeting to resolve all the issues including funding of the project.  Later, the Engineer-in-Chief, Balochistan Chief Secretary and other visited the project.
Kachhi Canal Project is of immense importance for agro-based socio economic development in the country, especially in Balochistan. The first phase, currently under construction, will irrigate about 55,000 acres of barren land in remote areas of Dera Bugti, boosting agriculture produce in the area.
