Employees stage protest against Wapda’s privatisation

LAHORE - Wapda Employees Union and Engineers’ Association on Thursday staged protests across the country against the proposed privatisation of power sector entities and Wapda.
Holding banners and placards, the workers of Lesco and Wapda chanted slogans against the government and vowed resist the move for privatization with full force. The protests caused traffic jam for hours at the Mall and other adjacent routes.
Later, the representative of Punjab held dialogue with the union leader which resulted end in protest on temporary basis. The union leaders announced to hold protests in Islamabad and strike in all cities of the country on January 28 if their demands were not met. INP adds: The protesters led the rally from Lahore Press Club to the Chief Minister House (CM) by blocking the Mall Road whereas the administration also called on heavy contingent of police.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Hydro Electric Employees Union (PHEU) in Kandhkot, Kashmo and Guddu demonstrated outside Chief Office for giving independent title to the power houses.
Leaders of Wapda PHEU Shams-ud-Din Solangi, Wali Muhammad Sehriyani, A.D Malik and Ayub Akhtar Zaidi while addressing the crowd refused to accept the privatisation of Wapda and demanded of the government to eliminate this decision as early as possible.
