Govt plans to enhance palm oil production

ISLAMABAD (PPI) - The government plans to enhance palm oil production in the country by bringing more area under canola and sunflower cultivation to save the foreign exchange currently being spent on the import of the commodity. Pakistan Oil Seed Development Board has undertaken oil palm plantation on 2260 acres in Coastal Areas of Sindh and Balochistan, besides a project for sunflower promotion is being implemented in D.I. Khan. Olive orchards have also been set up in the NWFP, Potohar and Balochistan with the public-private cooperation to enhance the production of olive oil. According to officials, quality canola seed is being provided to the growers at low prices besides the provision of improved production technologies and oil seed literature to growers free of cost to substantially enhance the production of edible oil. The farmers are also being facilitated to dispose off their produce at indicative price.
