KARACHI - Philips Pakistan will not promote any lighting products in Pakistan which are not energy efficient or do not comply with our global sustainability standards, Philips Pakistan Chairman and CEO Asad Jaffer while talking to a group of media people. "Although this involves a huge cost and sacrifice, we have changed our entire business model to pursue this cause and find solutions to salvage Pakistan from the ever-deepening energy crisis," he added. "We want to be part of energy conservation campaign in Pakistan as we are in rest of the world. The transition from old lighting to new system is faster in the world than Pakistan," he added. He said that Philips was in close contact with all utilities in the country to play its role in energy conservation. Asad Jaffer said that Philips Pakistan will replace old lighting systems with the latest and more energy efficient solutions under its global campaign to conserve energy. "In this regard, all Philips products will pass through an eco-design process, identifying environmental impact in terms of energy efficiency, hazardous substances, take-back and recycling, weight and lifetime reliability. Jaffer said that due to old inefficient lighting, 95pc of the energy is wasted in heat, with only 5pc generating light. "If new efficient lighting technologies were adopted globally, the world could achieve an energy saving of 40 per cent. This would save 106b euros in energy costs per year and possibly a saving of about 400m euros in Pakistan", he added. He said Philips Pakistan would also work closely with consumer groups, utility companies, specifies, consultants and other stakeholders and organise seminars and workshops for enhancing the use of quality energy efficient lighting solutions both for consumer as well as industrial applications to conserve energy. He said that lighting accounts for 20 percent or one-fifth of all electricity used in the world and much of this lighting is a based on century old technology. With a 118-year heritage of perpetual inventions and innovations Philips Lighting is by far the number one lighting brand globally. As the leading player of lighting products in Pakistan, Philips will be embarking on a major mission to improve energy awareness amongst consumers.
