Govt to produce power from agri waste

ISLAMABAD– In an apparent bid to generate power from cheap resources the government is initializing projects to produce power from agricultural/biomass waste.  According to the sources two energy projects of 12 megawatt gross capacity each have been approved by AEDB and are in pipeline while one SSJC bio energy project is at advance stage and scheduled to go in operation by the first quarter of 2014. This project would be completed with the cost of $19.82 million. Sources told that another projects of same kind Lumen Energia is under progress in Punjab with a cost of $22.62 million however due to some unknown reasons this project has been delayed. It was also informed that government plans to establish series of five units of same capacity of Lumen Energia in different cities of Punjab.Sources informed that Pakistan generates ten million tons of crops residue that can be used as fuel to generate 120 megawatt electricity while municipal non hazardous waste is 56,000 tons of solid waste on daily basis. Officials informed that international agencies have revived their interest and World Bank funded projects has also been initiated for conducting study for establishing waste to energy projects in 20 cities. It is pertinent to mention here that ever increasing prices of fossils fuels have promoted waste to energy technology which is fast becoming an increasingly important option for alternate power generation the world ever.Sources informed that 3,000 megawatt combined gross electricity can be generated by using agricultural residue and municipal therefore government should ensure timely implementation of all the waste energy projects.
