From Jinnah to Sharif

Muhammed Ali Jinnah’s personal physician Colonel Elahi Buksh, after coming in contact with him remarked, ‘he never knew that there could be honesty in politics’. Unfortunately Quaid’s Pakistan has moved from a scrupulously honest and un-compromising leadership, to a lack of it under the Sharif’s. Jinnah believed in confrontation, not compromise whereas now there is reliance on ‘Muk Muka’ (negotiated settlement). According to him everyone has a price; one if determined would get the job done. Rules, regulations, SOP’s had no significance for him.

Jinnah’s focus was on nation building. He preached unity, faith and discipline. He was one of the highest paid lawyers in the country, but would gladly refund the fee if the case was settled in a shorter period of time. The Jinnah house in Bombay is one of the most expensive properties whose ownership Pakistan has claimed , while the one in Lahore is occupied by the Corps Commander and in Karachi has been turned into his museum. His two grandsons are settled in New York and so is his daughter. There are no direct descendants in the country that he created through an undaunted struggle spread over three to four decades.

In early 1948 Jinnah wrote a letter to Professor Rutherford a noble laureate requesting him to recommend one of his students to start research in physics in the country. On his recommendation, Dr. Rafi Chaudhry joined Government College Lahore and built the first high tension physics Lab in Asia. Later, on his students produced the Nuclear Device for the country. After Jinnah’s death Khawaja Nazimuddin a stalwart of the Pakistan Movement, became the Governor General while Liaquat Ali Khan continued as the Prime Minister.

Nation building remained high on the agenda. Despite setbacks including the assassination of the first PM the frame work for development were completed. Sui-gas was discovered in 1952 and distribution started in 1955, for industrial development Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC) was created. For scientific research, Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) came into being, while the nuclear program was launched with the formation of Pakistan Atomic Energy Corporation (PAEC). In 1956, the first constitution was also formulated with consensus. Elections were scheduled for October 1958, but instead Ayub Khan imposed martial law and derailed the first Islamic Democracy of the World.

With the Elected Bodies Disqualification Ordinance (EBDO) he sent all the founding fathers home and created his own party (PML-Convention) and brand of politicians. Chaudhris of Gujrat (Zahoor Elahi, Pervez Elahi, Shujaat Hussain) were his gift. Zia the third Khaki dictator then founded PML (N) and introduced the Sharif’s of Lahore

In Iran, after the Islamic Revolution in 1979 special courts were set-up for crimes against the nation. Shah’s team of Khakis, Baboos, Qazis and Politicians were tried and hanged for their anti-people acts. A fresh start was made. Status-quo and its players were totally eliminated from harm’s way. Lessons were leant from the CIA sponsored over throw of the first elected Prime Minister (PM) Dr. Muhammad Mossediq in the early fifties. Today Iran is a sovereign country and the only democracy in the Middle East after Israel.

In order to achieve an orderly transition from apartheid to democracy, Nelson Mandela created the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa. People in authority were forgiven for their sins against humanity provided they accepted their guilt and sought for give-ness.

Without cleansing there can be no change otherwise it will be more of the same.

In Jinnah’s Pakistan there was merit, by and large people in authority were financially honest. In Sharif’s Pakistan, this is missing. There was first a transition from good to bad and before it gets ugly we have to move in the direction of Jinnah’s Pakistan and away from Sharif’s.

In fact ‘Naya Pakistan’ is the original concept of the motherland by the founding fathers.

Jinnah himself was a role model who commanded respect all around. His wealth was well earned. People who surrounded him emulated and tried to follow in his footsteps. In his cabinet meetings only water was served. There was conservation of nation’s wealth and assets not plunder. Nadir Shahi was contained and rule of law was ensured. Traffic was not stopped for his motorcade to pass. He died on a footpath in Karachi when his ambulance broke down but his legacy is everlasting because of his service and sacrifice to the nation. In his Pakistan most people were honest and able.

In Sharif’s Pakistan people on top are either loan or tax defaulters, some even culprits of money laundering. Conflict of interest is either ignored or deliberately misunderstood. Recently millions have been ear marked for the security of ‘Jatti Umra’ the private residence of the Sharif’s, Jinnah would have never allowed this kind of misuse of public funds. His personal physician has written about his last days at the residency in Ziarat where he refused to accept silk night suits and expensive socks to make him comfortable. He traveled first class but paid from his own pocket, while Gandhi’s austerity was covered by the party funds. One by one, the stalwarts of Jinnah’s Pakistan are now moving to their heavenly abode leaving the country in the unsafe hands of the thugs and plunderers. We are the link between Jinnah’s and Naya Pakistan but for that to happen we have to pull the nation out of the shadows of corruption meticulously spread by the Sharifs. It is time to unplug their life support systems that are causing death of Jinnah’s Pakistan. Credible elections and rule of law is the way forward to fulfill the mission of the father of the nation Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah who was able to carve a separate homeland for the Muslims of India through an honest struggle not Muk Muka or manipulation as practiced by the Sharif’s.
