Preserving identity

SOME of the stamps issued by the Pakistan Postal Service carry glowing images of the Ziarat Residency, the place where the founder of the nation spent his last days. But it is with a sense of sadness that one hears that the Residency is in a poor state of maintenance. Having been left to the mercy of weather and erosion, it lies in ruins. Worse still, it is unfortunate that the federal government has decided to turn a blind eye to this grim reality and refused to allocate funds for renovation Thankfully, the issue was highlighted by Deputy Chairman Senate Jan Mir Jamali, who warned that if proper care and renovation was not accorded, the building might collapse very soon. Nations regard such places as historical sites, as valuable assets, and do everything to preserve them. This is what forms the identity of a civilization as well. Undoubtedly, our performance in this area has been far from satisfactory. Rather, this culpable indifference to the residence of the man who gave us an independent country could not have depicted more clearly our tendency to disown our tradition and culture. What to talk of other cultural and heritage sites?
