Catch Bugti killers

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has very rightly observed that chanting hollow slogans would not improve the deteriorating law and order situation in Balochistan and urgent concrete measures are required to achieve the desired result. The Chief Justice is heading a three-member bench of the apex court hearing a petition regarding worsening law and order and rising incidents of target killings. The bench has directed the Chief Secretary of the province to appear before it on the next hearing date with a written statement on the prevailing situation and steps being taken to improve it. The court was of the view that the situation could not be improved by issuing political statements alone. The Chief Justice also expressed his displeasure that despite the fact that a case has been registered against the alleged killers of Nawab Akbar Bugti, the accused included former president Gen Pervez Musharraf who allegedly ordered the military operation are still at large. He inquired from the Advocate General of the province as to what actions have so far been taken to bring the culprits to book. The court directed both the federal as well as provincial government to join hands to improve the law and order so that people could get a sigh of relief in the wake of target killing, kidnapping of judges, lecturers and professors adding that court would not sit as a silent spectator and would initiate action against those responsible. Attorney General who appeared on behalf of the Federal Government referred to a statement of the Prime Minister that he made at the floor of the National Assembly. The Bench observed that the Premiers address contains wishes and lacks any concrete steps. The poor law and order situation in Balochistan has forced the people to migrate to adjoining provinces since they have no faith in the measures so far taken by the provincial government and the federal authorities. This is alarming and calls for urgent review before it is too late. On-going insurgency has posed serious challenges to the stability of the province that calls for changing the approach of the law enforcing agencies as well. The time is of essence.
