Unstoppable leaks

The floodgates of diplomatic secrets that WikiLeaks opened some days ago continue to sling mud on the reputation of leaderships in the targeted countries. In Pakistan, which has been bearing the main brunt of adverse revelations, the rulers have started consorting with one another in a desperate bid to do damage control. They are either denying, clarifying or putting up excuses that answers to certain points, raised in the leaks, have not been found. The Defence Committee of the Cabinet, comprising top military and political rulers, met at Islamabad on Friday and condemned the release of cables as an attempt to harm the image of the country. Meetings to discuss the fall-out of the leaks also took place between President Zardari and COAS General Kayani, and between Prime Minister Gilani and the COAS. In the meantime, the ISPR has issued a statement, maintaining that the military high command has great regard for Mian Nawaz Sharif and other political leaders and is committed to remain confined to the role assigned to it by the Constitution. The clarification is in response to what the leaked cables have been talking about. It must be stated, however, that WikiLeaks do contain some silver lining for Pakistan. If Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf leader Imran Khan got a clean chit for his steadfast opposition to Americas war on terror and its presence in Afghanistan as well as the region, Mian Nawaz Sharif is also feared by former US Ambassador Anne Patterson as a supporter of Islam and, on this count, his ascension to power is viewed as against the American interests. It thus stands confirmed in the words of the Ambassador that the US policymakers believe that support for Islam would do harm to the American interests, exposing the charade known as the war on terror as nothing but something designed to target Islam, contrary to the repeated declarations of the US administration, including Presidents Bush and Obama, that it is militancy and extremism they are trying to root out and have great respect for Islam. It also goes to the credit to PML-N leader Mian Nawaz Sharif that while WikiLeaks elsewhere suggests that he wanted to establish his pro-American credentials in conversation with US interlocutors, he made no bones about his firm belief, while talking to Ambassador Patterson, that without the restoration of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, the purpose of ensuring the supremacy of law and Constitution in the country could not be achieved. This was when she kept insisting that the Chief Justice could not be restored. Washington is also shown in bad light when it encourages greater role of India in Afghanistan, despite our opposition to it. How much more evidence do we need to open our eyes to the reality behind the US pleas of an abiding friendship with Pakistan?
