Indians want it too

That the Kashmir issue is the result of stubbornness among a small elite which still subscribes to the old Congressite hunger for Kashmir, driven by the atavistic desire for the original Nehruvian homeland, is shown by the latest Pew Research Centre survey, which found that 77 percent of Indians wanted an improvement of relations with Pakistan by a solution of the Kashmir problem. This shows the utter failure of New Delhi’s refusal to discuss the Kashmir issue with Pakistan, as even the present Pakistan government’s complicity in this lack of dialogue has failed to convince the ordinary Indian that there can be a resolution with Pakistan without resolving the Kashmir issue first. At the same time six out of 10 Indians think Pakistan is the biggest threat to India, bigger than the Lashkar-i-Taiba or the Maoist Naxalites, so it cannot be said that this is not a live issue. Yet the Congress, still dominated by the Nehruvian legacy through the Gandhis, and the BJP, which is merely the political arm of the Hindu-supremacist Sangh Parivar, have both refused to come to making peace with Pakistan through solving the Kashmir issue. It must not be forgotten that a solution to the Kashmir issue does not mean bowing to the wishes of New Delhi, but giving the Kashmiri people their inherent right of self-determination through a UN-supervised plebiscite, as provided in the UN Security Council resolutions on the subject. The solution of this issue would also  help address the Indian failure that can be seen in the exhibition of the mentality that was made by the revelation that 59 percent of Hindus have an unfavourable view of their Muslim neighbours. As both Pakistan and Kashmir are overwhelmingly Muslim, there will be some spillover in attitudes to both. However, the survey results also imply that neither of the two major parties pay enough attention to public opinion. If they did, they would be hastening to talk with Pakistan about the holding of a plebiscite in Kashmir. Instead, it seems the Indian ruling classes rely on the upper class chauvinism of their voters to continue their brutal illegal occupation of Kashmir.Pakistan must not join the Indian ruling classes in doing what they do best, and try and brush this report under the carpet. Instead, they should bring it to the attention of the world as showing that the Indian public also wants a just solution to the Kashmir, and only a rabid minority in India insists on maintaining its illegal occupation.
