PMs interview

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that an opposition alliance was a non-starter because he knew that those behind the alliance would come to know how difficult it was to first form, and then run, such a coalition. While speaking in an interview to Waqt News telecast on Monday, Mr Gilani have had in mind his own experience in forming and running the present government which is a coalition, but he should remember that those who are now speaking of an opposition alliance, are those who have formed and run both opposition alliances and governments while Mr Gilani had only started climbing the rungs of the ladder which have brought him to his present high office. It must also be noted that Mr Gilani would obviously be against any opposition alliance as it would be aimed at his government, but he should keep in mind that after the departure of the MQM from his coalition, only the presence of the PML-Q gives him a majority in Parliament allowing him to carry on his government and that too a narrow one. Mr Gilani also spoke about ties with the USA, which have been tempestuous in recent times especially, starting with the Raymond Davis affair, and then the killing of Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad, which was yet another violation of Pakistans sovereignty, following that represented by the constant drone attacks in the tribal areas, which killed with impunity Pakistani citizens, but which did not stop the constant American calls to 'do more, in the hopeless task of helping the Americans find a safe exit from Afghanistan. Mr Gilani laid a great deal of emphasis on joint operations on an equal basis. However, he stayed away from the real solution, which would be to abandon the American alliance and thus get out of its war on terror. His defence of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seems to neglect his belonging to the Congress Party, which has never acknowledged the existence of Pakistan ever since it conspired against the Muslim League and the Quad-i-Azam so many decades ago. However, by charging the opposition with portraying a bad image of the country abroad by pointing to corruption charge against them, Mr Gilani made it seem as if he was defending the official corruption taking place, rather than tackling the problem, which increases the suspicion that his governments absence of action against the President despite clear court verdicts is because it is there to help him escape the consequences of his actions, not help bring him to account. Apart from corruption, Mr Gilanis government has seen the common man suffer due to inflation and shortages.
